The Top 5 Plumbing Emergencies

As a homeowner, it is frustrating when you have to deal with a plumbing emergency. Not only are you inconvenienced by not being able to use sinks and toilets, but you must also find a professional to help diagnose and fix the issue. Luckily, there are various steps that you can take in order to mitigate the damage if something occurs. There are a number of plumbing emergencies that can happen and knowing what to do in each situation will go a long way.

  • Frozen Pipes – Frozen pipes not only restrict water flow in your home, they also present the risk of bursting and causing a great deal of damage. It is important to heat the pipes back up immediately in order to prevent a burst.
  • Burst Pipes – If left unnoticed, frozen pipes can lead to burst pipes and a huge mess. Locate the emergency shutoff valve to your house and close it immediately while the emergency plumber arrives to fix the situation.
  • Leaky Fixtures – Not all leaks are found by seeing dripping water from faucets. Wall or cabinet stains can signify leaks in the pipes as well. Clamps may temporarily stop a leak from getting worse, but it is best to work with a plumber to replace damages and avoid the growth of mold.
  • Blocked Drains – Broken pipes, incorrect pipe installation or debris can all cause blocked drains in your system. Using a plunger or plumber’s snake should help you clear the problem.
  • Gas Leaks – Gas leaks are extremely dangerous and can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, fires or explosions. If you notice the smell of rotten eggs or hissing near a gas line, immediately call the fire department and an emergency plumber.

By preparing for each potential scenario ahead of time, you will be able to get your pipes fixed and avoid potential disaster.
